Are (french) macarons the new cupcake??
Possibly. Macaron shops are popping up all over NYC and I am MORE than pleased. I kinda sorta love french macarons.
Remember when I took a class in Paris at La Cuisine Paris to make them?? Or remember the time I tried to make them by scratch (without a Kitchen Aid) with Chef Piero??
Oh wait, I probably didn’t tell you about that failed experiment…
So when I heard about Macaron Day, I was intrigued. When I heard they were giving away free macarons, I was ecstatic!
I searched the website for participating stores, mapped out a macaron guide, dragged along my next door neighbor (umm, I had to share the calories with someone) and got started on the Upper East Side.
LET THE MACARON HUNT BEGIN!
1. Mad Mac at Bernardaud :: Guest Appearances from Florian Bellanger and Ludovic Augendre!!
2. Macaron Cafe :: Broken Samples… not-so-great service
3. Francois Payard at The Plaza Hotel :: Exceptional Service & Great Variety
- 1 W 58th St
5. La Maison du Chocolat :: Out of Macs but semi-relieved…
Prettiest Macs? Francois Payard. Perfect circles. Nice feet. Macaron Colors complimented fillings based on their flavor (i.e. passion fruit displayed in photo).
Most Intriguing? Macaron Cafe. Solely for their bright color combos.
Best Mac Out of the Bunch? Mad Mac by Florian & Ludovic. Taste, texture, presentation, filling- SPOT ON.
And no, I was not swayed by their French accents ;)
