I spy with my little eye… a baby bump behind the pillar…

It’s Erin McKenna of Babycakes NYC at Sur La Table on the Upper West Side!

“Erin McKenna is the chef and owner of BabyCakes, a bakery with outposts in New York City, Los Angeles and Orlando. Her bakery, BabyCakes, offers all-natural, organic and delicious alternatives free from the common allergens: wheat, gluten, dairy, casein and eggs.”

So now that you know Erin McKenna and what she’s all about, I’ll tell you why I spent the evening with her at Sur La Table!

Erin demo’ed some of her gluten-free/allergy-free recipes from her newest book: Babycakes Covers the Classics and she even spoke about an iPhone app she’s currently working on! Exciting, right?!

On the menu?

  • Gluten Free Waffles
  • Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies from Scratch
  • Gluten Free Cupcakes & Frosting

Are you gluten-intolerant? No. I am not gluten-intolerant. I do suffer from seasonal allergies but nothing major. I just chose to sit in on this Monday Night demo ($25.00) because I’m super curious to learn more about how food affects the body and solutions/options for people with allergies…

Oh and even though I’ve been to the Babycakes location in SoHo, I may or may not have been eager to taste-test these treats directly from the master herself!

So the first taste test of the night… Gluten-Free Waffles with agave nectar (natural syrup from cactus).

Verdict: They taste almost identical to the waffles my Mom used to make me for breakfast. Substitute the thick maple syrup I love from Canda with a lighter agave nectar syrup and BAM, breakfast is served.

Next up Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Since these are allergy free, Erin McKenna uses Bob’s Red Mill flour and told us not to forget to pat them down once they’re on the tray…

Verdict: They look like big, flat chocolate chip cookies that remind me of Chips Ahoy cookies… but they’re heaps easier to digest for those with allergies! As a non-gluten-free person, I really enjoy my Levain Bakery cookies, but if I had food allergies, and needed a chocolate chip fix… you better believe I’d be ordering at least a dozen.

Next up, Gluten-Free Cupcakes! Erin just came out with a ready to bake cupcake mix & frosting combo for clients to enjoy at home. It’s a genius idea since there are people with allergies all over the world that do not have access to a Babycakes ;)

True Story: A vegan in Hong Kong said me, “I’m sure you’ve heard of Babycakes since you’re from NYC… I have a lot of food allergies and wish we had a Babycakes here in HK!” My response, “Never assume.” I hadn’t heard of Babycakes until she mentioned it. Glad I’m in the loop now!

Look at that swirl! I just took a frosting class at Butter Lane Cupcakes and STILL need more practice.

Man, I want to swipe my finger right into that frosting!

She answers some of the audiences questions (most of us were not gluten-free, just gluten-curious) and Erin gives us some baking tips as well as a bunch of laughs here and there.
