NEW YORK, NY :: JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION EVENTS // overview, chefs night out, plaza hotel, jbf awards 2013, lincoln center

My head hit the pillow earlier this morning… it’s almost 1pm now… and I still haven’t left my couch.

The past 48 hours have been a whirlwind of affairs: Chefs Night Out (Sunday), The 2013 James Beard Foundation Awards (Monday), and my final cooking exam squeezed in between. Somehow luck was on my side in order to attend all three major events. And if you follow me on facebook, twitter and/or instagram, you got a sneak peak in pictures.

Sunday Night at Chefs Night Out: This was the pre-awards gathering for everyone in the industry to eat, drink and party at The Plaza Hotel NYC. Most were dressed in cocktail attire, and the other half rocked sneakers, shorts and a jacket. It was a nice event with familiar faces, good music, and an abundance of food in a NYC landmark.

Monday Night at The JBF Awards: The awards were hosted at Lincoln Center, filled with hundreds of people dressed in black tie. I saw a majority of the same faces who were at Chefs Night Out, but there was one significant difference between this event and the day before- what might that be you ask? Well, by the time I arrived to the Awards (around 9pm after cooking my final exam – literally chefs hat to party dress), a handful of these individuals had been awarded a JBF medal that will merit their career for the rest of their lives. More on the Awards: The event began at 6:00pm and then the gala tasting started around 8:30pm. Around 11:00pm, when everyone had their chance to wine and dine, the event was complete. Everyone finished their last sip of champagne and went to their after party of choice. Personally, we chose to go to The Nomad After Party- they had an amazing DJ, a great crowd, and you’ll never guess what the chefs put out to snack on…


For those of you who aren’t familiar with the awards, the James Beard Foundation Awards are the equivalent to the Oscars in the food industry. Attendees ranged from Daniel Boulud, Danny Meyer, Jacques Pepin, Martha Stewart, Mario Batali, EVERYONE (well, almost everyone… I was looking forward to seeing Wolfgang Puck)!

During the event, my colleagues at JBF gave a play by play via twitter of the nominees and award recipients, so if you take an hour to read through their #jbfa tweets today, it will literally feel as if you were there.

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the Books, Broadcast, Journalism Awards on Friday since I was cooking my Friday Night Dinner at my culinary school, but I caught up on the event by reading the list of JBF Award Winners.
